Thyroid Self-Test

With the holidays here, eating and drinking too much might not be the only reason for weight gain.

There has also been an alarming increase in thyroid cancer in recent years. This quick self test can help you determine if you need think you might have a thyroid condition.

What you need:
• Glass of Water
• Handheld Mirror

1. Hold the mirror in your hand focusing on the area of your neck just below your Adam's apple and immediately above the collarbone. This is the area where your thyroid is located. (is located closer to the collarbone. Don't get the thyroid confused with the actual Adam's apple).

2. While focusing on this area in the mirror, tip your head back.

3. Take a drink of water and swallow.

4. As you swallow, look at your neck. Check for any bulges or protrusions in this area when you swallow. (you might need to repeat the process)

5. If you see any bulges or protrusions in this area, see your physician or feel free to come and see us. You may have an enlarged thyroid gland or thyroid nodule and should be checked out to determine whether cancer is present or if treatment for thyroid disease is needed.

Feel free to contact our office with any questions. www.drscottjurica.com

How to Get the Most Cost-Effective Healthcare

With the current crisis in our healthcare system I wanted to share that there are some great ways to get the best most cost-effective healthcare. Some ways you might know while others you might not.

I highly encourage you do forward to anyone you know as there is mass confusion about the topic.

SO WHAT IS THE BEST HEALTHCARE?

While I am grateful for our tools of modern medicine such as surgical advancements, medication (when medically appropriate), there is an entire other side that many people (including friends and family members of my patients) don't understand and think doesn't even work.

In May 2007 in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, there was a study showing the cost effectiveness of natural medicine. The summary is as follows:

Based on 70,274 member-months over a 7 year period demonstrated the following:

60.2% reduction on hospital admissions
59.0% less hospital stays
62.0% less outpatient surgeries and procedures
85.0% LESS PHARMACEUTICAL COSTS

This is compared to the conventional medicine performance for the same health maintenance organization product in the same geography and time frame.

Pretty cool if you ask me...

Of course as in research you always need to do more studies investigation, etc as you will read in any report, but to have someone say natural medicine doesn't work, your are wasting your money, etc simply doesn't know the facts.

How do I find a natural, holistic doctor?

If you are within the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT) we would love to have you in our office (we do take some insurance. Contact our office for details). We can even do phone consults if you are further away with you faxing your bloodwork and other labwork.

If you need a doctor in person you MUST first understand this:

Medical, Osteopathic and Chiropractic schools all do an incredible job of getting the basics about anatomy, physiology, pathology, diagnosis, etc. Some people think chiropractors aren't educated enough. Please look at this link showing the comparision of medical and chiropractic school education.

http://www.proactivesf.com/wp-content/uploads/how-well-educated-is-your-chiropractor.pdf

What matters is finding a doctor who is about getting to the cause of the problem and looking at a holistic, natural way first. Most of this education is currently done in post graduate work. Talk to friends. If they don't know someone, contact our office and we will see if we can find someone close to you.

We look forward to serving you in any way possible. Feel free to contact the office with any questions.

9 Simple Rules of Eating

For those of you who are my patients, many of these should sound quite familiar to you.

9 Simple Rules of Eating

1. Eat food. Though in our current state of confusion, this is much easier said than done. So try this: Don't eat anything your great-great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.

2. Avoid even those food products that come bearing health claims. They're apt to be heavily processed, and the claims are often dubious at best.

3. Especially avoid food products containing ingredients that are a) unfamiliar, b) unpronounceable c) more than five in number or that contain high-fructose corn syrup.

4. Get out of the supermarket whenever possible. You won't find any high-fructose corn syrup at the farmer's market; you also won't find food harvested long ago and far away. What you will find are fresh whole foods picked at the peak of nutritional quality. Precisely the kind of food your great-great- grandmother would have recognized as food.

5. Pay more, eat less. The American food system has for a century devoted its energies and policies to increasing quantity and reducing price, not to improving quality. Americans spend, on average, less than 10 percent of their income on food, down from 24 percent in 1947, and less than the citizens of any other nation.

6. Eat mostly plants, especially leaves. By eating a plant-based diet, you'll be consuming far fewer calories, since plant foods (except seeds) are typically less energy dense than the other things you might eat. Vegetarians are healthier than carnivores, but near vegetarians (flexitarians) are as healthy as vegetarians. Thomas Jefferson was on to something when he advised treating meat more as a flavoring than a food.

7. Eat more like the French. Or the Japanese. Or the Italians. Or the Greeks. Confounding factors aside, people who eat according to the rules of a traditional food culture are generally healthier than we are. Any traditional diet will do: if it weren't a healthy diet, the people who follow it wouldn't still be around.

8. Cook. And if you can, plant a garden. To take part in the intricate and endlessly interesting processes of providing for our sustenance is the surest way to escape the culture of fast food and the values implicit in it: that food should be cheap and easy; that food is fuel and not communion.

9. Eat like an omnivore. Try to add new species, not just new foods, to your diet. Biodiversity in the diet means less monoculture in the fields. What does that have to do with your health? Everything. The vast monocultures that now feed us require tremendous amounts of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to keep from collapsing. Diversifying those fields will mean fewer chemicals, healthier soils, healthier plants and animals and, in turn, healthier people. It's all connected, which is another way ofsaying that your health isn't bordered by your body and that what's good for the soil is probably good for you, too.

Must "To Do's" for the Flu Season

What to do for the flu? The key is to stay healthy, versus getting the flu THEN trying to treat it

Here are some reminders:
· Get plenty of sleep
· Drink plenty of water· Limit sweets (sugar can suppress the immune system)· Eat good fats (Click below for an overall food guide)
http://images.drscottjurica.com/documents/81/Phase2.pdf
· Have homemade chicken stock (using apple cider vinegar)· Take a good multi vitamin like CATALYN (Standard Process)
However, even in the best circumstance, you may come down with a cold or flu. There are few really good products I recommend. Again, they are all 20% retail

If you are fearful of getting or have been diagnosed with swine flu, here is a great homeopathic remedy FDA approved with the specific strains designated by the World Health Organization. Check out the detail at www.kingbio.com

For overall flu prevention, Systemic Formulas Anti-Viro ViVi drops are amazing. They contain Pau D Arco and Lomentium Dissecticum. For prevention take about 6-8 drops daily. If you get the flu you can take up to about 12-14 drops.

Finally is a product, CONGAPLEX, which supports the Thymus that is the critical gland in antibody production and transforming white cells into infection-fighting killer cells. It also provides vitamins from whole-food concentrates that are full of real vitamins, A, C, J, K and bioflavonoids and more. It is derived from organically grown plants, processed in a way that keeps all vital forces intact. It also contains fish oil and support for bones.

CONGAPLEX contains Calcium Lactate, the easiest form of calcium to utilize and magnesium (it is not a dairy product). It is critical for those prone to fevers and infections.
If you have continual problems during cold and flu season, take 3-6 daily. If you don't have continual problems, you might consider 1-2 daily as preventive.

At the first sign of problems, take 2 per waking hour for 48 hours. This will almost always stop the problem. Even infants can take it---one every two hours will almost always bring a fever to normal within 8 to 12 hours and end most colds and flu in a day or two. It can also be used at the first sign of an ear infection.

Contact our office today for any of these products or any questions about the flu.

Are YOU like POOH?

Not like Pooh, the most effortless Bear we've ever seen."
"Just How do you do it, Pooh?"
"Do What?" asked Pooh.
"Become so Effortless."
"I don't do much of anything," he said.
"But all those things of yours get done."
"They just sort of happen," he said"

Some of you are wondering where I am going with this and others might know of the subject.

It takes me a LONG time to read a book...I highlight it, take notes, type them up, etc. This one I feel can change you from the inside out and is quite and easy and quick read (unless you are like me).

So WHY do I recommend this book? It teaches you how to think much more simple and to CALM YOUR MIND, which I think we all need. And how you ask???

By being more like Winnie the Pooh. The book "Tao of Pooh" discusses all of this while the author has a conversation with Winnie. It's a very clever and very thought-provoking book.

Here are a couple more quotes to help intrigue you:

Rabbit's clever," said Pooh thoughtfully. "Yes,"said Piglet, "Rabbit's clever." "And he has Brain." "Yes," said Piglet, "Rabbit has Brain." There was a long silence. "I suppose," said Pooh, "that's why he never understands anything."

And finally...

"Those who do things the Pooh Way fine this sort of thing happening to them all the time. It's hard to explain, except by example, but it works. Things just happen the right way, at the right time. At least when you LET them, when you work WITH circumstances instead of saying "This isn't supposed to happen this way," and trying hard to make it happen another way."

Hope you go read it and enjoy it as much as I do.

Why Do We Think We are Smarter Than Nature?

The Truth About Fats--Understanding Human Physiology

It's really best to not be around me when certain commercials or morning show segments come on TV. Its exhausting and frustrating to see what we are told by so many yet we continue to not only get more ill as a society, but are not even looking at human physiology.

Let's keep it very simple and as I say, use the lost art of common sense:

Since the early 1980's, we have continued to decrease our fat intake yet are more overweight than we have ever been.

We are told to take off the skin off the chicken because it's "bad" yet 70% of chicken fat is UNsaturated fat. ("Know Your Fats" by Dr. Sally Fallon)

We are told to stay away from saturated fat yet most fat structures (brain, nerve tissue, cell membranes and hormones) are composed of saturated fats. Guess what happens to those structures as you take away the building blocks?

Why do smokers increase the risk of arteriosclerosis? Is there fat in the cigarettes?

Saturated fat causes heart disease? NOPE. Check out this link below to read the research behind this.

http://www.westonaprice.org/moderndiseases/hd.html

Is anyone else confused? I too was told all of the opposite stuff growing up, yet once I began my own research and listened to the appropriate doctors and researchers, I began to question this.

We have to go back to the basics. Life and health is about balance. By eating real organic foods you will get the correct amount of BOTH saturated and unsaturated fats your body needs.

For more details about the truth of fats click on my article below.

Getting What You Pay For Takes on a WHOLE New Meaning

Just wanted to send a quick note out about this. Seems everyone is being affected by the economy...even how products are being made.

Good Morning America reported on a scary thing happening in our food industry...diluting food products to increase profits. We already know about chip bags being smaller, having more air, etc, but this takes it to a new level.

How to prevent from getting products like this?

Hard to dilute organic chicken: Get organic, whole, REAL food. Processed foods can now take on a whole new meaning with iti containing less food and more garbage than before. One a budget? Whatever you eat the most of during the day, make it organic.

Stay away from knock off brands: Seems off brands like olive oil and honey are some of the biggest culprits. They found one brand of olive oil to be 90% SUNFLOWER OIL. Interesting.

If it just looks too inexpensive, watch out: If you KNOW ther eis no way you can get a certain product at a dollar star, odds are it might not be worth even that.

In these times of economic uncertainty, don't let your health go down with it. Eat as well as you can and let me know of any questions you have.
